I remember in my younger
days I used to be an avid running. I used to run up to 13 to 14 kilometers per
day. I was also extremely fit too. But one day, when I was doing some sprinting
exercises, I started to encounter shooting pain in the front of my legs. Being
the kind of guy to try and shrug off the pain, I put up with the, thinking that
it would pass. Needless to say, it didn't take long before it become so painful
that even casual walking was a chore. I decided to head off to my doctor to get
him to look at it and his response at the time was that it was not exactly
known that was going on with the exception that once you have the problem,
you've probably got it for life.
I tried to work around the shin splints for several weeks after that but it didn't take long before the pain took its toll and my running days were over. It's been close to 17 years since then and I still have tried to improve my running but it doesn't take more than a couple days of moderate running to bring them back into full pain mode. It was then that I found my solution to the problem. I was talking to a friend who is a massage therapist and I had mentioned my shin splints problem with no medical solution. She replied immediately by telling me that she had looked into this issue as well and found a solution. I was quite eager to hear her idea, though I was skeptical. She had said that there is a lot of thought to the fact that it is related to the muscles, of course, but over stressed ligaments more so. She told me that the best thing to do was to gradually introduce more and more stress the legs and when the pain started to perk up, take a moment to relax and stretch out the leg. Then continue. When completed, ice the leg for about 30 minutes after.
I decided to try this, as I didn't have any other treatment ideas. So, every time my legs started to become afflicted by the shin splints, I would stop, stretch and get going again. The first day I stopped three types, and I was only briskly walking. On day two, it was about the same, although the shin splinters were not as bad. By day five, they had just about disappeared! I still have them flare up every couple of weeks and I've stuck to brisk walking, but this treatment just works. I would recommend that you give it a try if you suffer from shin splints.
